Industrial Corridor Node

Palakkad Industrial Smart City (Palakkad IMC) — Overview

Palakkad Industrial Smart City, also called the Palakkad Integrated Manufacturing Cluster (IMC), is a 1,710-acre greenfield industrial city under construction in Palakkad district, Kerala — the first node of the Kochi-Bengaluru Industrial Corridor under India's National Industrial Corridor Development Programme (NICDP). As of late 2025, land acquisition is largely complete and a core-infrastructure construction contract has been awarded, but the site is not yet operational.

What it is

The Palakkad Industrial Smart City is an under construction greenfield industrial smart city spread over an area of 1,710 acres (6.9 km2) in Palakkad district, Kerala, India. It is officially referred to as an Integrated Manufacturing Cluster (IMC), and it is being developed by the National Industrial Corridor Development Corporation (NICDC) as part of the Kochi-Bengaluru Industrial Corridor (KBIC), which connects the central and southern regions of India. This corridor is an extension of the Chennai-Bengaluru Industrial Corridor (CBIC), stretching to Kochi via Coimbatore.

Who is building it

The Palakkad Smart City's development is coordinated by the Kerala Industrial Corridor Development Corporation Limited (KICDC), a special purpose vehicle formed through equal equity partnership between KINFRA, representing the state, and the National Industrial Corridor Development and Implementation Trust (NICDIT) under the central government. At the national level, NICDC serves as the nodal agency for the wider National Industrial Corridor Development Programme (NICDP).

Official area, villages and district

The Palakkad Industrial Smart City spans 1,710 acres across Pudussery Central, Pudussery West, and Kannambra, all within Palakkad district, Kerala. According to KICDC's project pages, the split is roughly Pudussery West (240 acres) with the remainder across the Pudussery Central and Kannambra parcels. The site sits 20 km from Palakkad City, with figures of 150 km from Cochin and 50 km from Coimbatore given by NICDC/KICDC, while a Ministry press release cites 21 km from Palakkad city, 120 km from Cochin, and 50 km from Coimbatore — sources vary slightly on the Kochi distance.

Why it exists

The Palakkad node was approved to develop Palakkad as an industrial smart city, providing a major boost to the Kochi-Bengaluru industrial corridor, which is an extension of the Chennai-Bengaluru Industrial Corridor (CBIC). The corridor addresses infrastructure bottlenecks through a holistic approach while benefiting from the inherent strengths and competitiveness of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Kerala's project document notes the project site is located close to the Kochi-Salem National Highway and will be the only industrial area to promote medicinal chemicals and botanical products, alongside non-metallic mineral products, rubber and plastic products, hi-tech industry, fabricated metal products, and machinery and equipment. The Centre expects the project to see Rs 3,806 crore spent in Palakkad alone, generating 51,000 jobs in the district.

Current status

Timeline of key milestones reported so far:

As of this writing (early 2026), the project is in the core-infrastructure construction stage; it is not yet operational and no industrial units have been reported as commissioned.

Headline connectivity

Planned industries by parcel

KICDC's parcel-level master plans indicate different sector mixes for each of the three land agglomerations:

ParcelLead sectors (share of industrial area)
Pudussery CentralDominant focus on Pharmaceuticals (58%), supported by Non-Metallic Mineral Products (10%), Hi-tech & Textiles (7%), Food & Beverages (6%), and Machinery & Equipment (6%).
KannambraSector-focused industrial growth including Food and Beverages (37%), Non-Metallic Mineral Products (32%), and Rubber & Plastic Industries (31%).
Pudussery WestEnvisioned as a sector-specific industrial enclave designed to optimize land use and accelerate industrial growth.

What happens next

With land assembly largely finished and the EPC contract signed, the immediate work is building trunk infrastructure. The EPC contract covers the complete design, construction, and maintenance of essential infrastructure, including roads, bridges, drainage systems, water supply networks, fire-fighting systems, water reuse facilities, sewer lines, power distribution systems, a sewage treatment plant, and industrial effluent collection and treatment plants. Kerala's industries department has also said bids will soon be invited for the construction of the Integrated Command and Control Centre, landscaping, and other key urban infrastructure. Beyond the current site, NICDC's own project documents describe a further, separate early-bird proposal for the corridor — a proposed "Global City" node of approximately 543 acres envisioned with a financial/business centre as an integral part and growth driver, complemented by knowledge-based service sectors — though this is a distinct, less-advanced proposal and should not be confused with the Palakkad IMC itself. Once core infrastructure is complete, the next milestone to watch for is formal plot allotment to industrial investors.

Frequently asked questions

Is 'Palakkad IMC' the same place as 'Palakkad Industrial Smart City'?

Yes. IMC stands for Integrated Manufacturing Cluster — the official planning term NICDC uses for the project — while 'Palakkad Industrial Smart City' is the popular/media name for the same 1,710-acre site.

Who actually owns and develops the project?

Implementation is handled by the Kerala Industrial Corridor Development Corporation (KICDC), a 50:50 joint venture between KINFRA (Kerala) and NICDIT (Centre), with NICDC as the national nodal agency for the broader corridor programme.

Where exactly is the site located?

It covers three land parcels — Pudussery Central, Pudussery West, and Kannambra — in Palakkad district, Kerala, roughly 20 km from Palakkad city and about 50 km from Coimbatore.

Is the site operational yet?

No. As of late 2025, land acquisition was around 85% complete and a core-infrastructure (EPC) construction contract had just been awarded; the project is under construction, not yet operational.

How much investment and how many jobs is it expected to bring?

Official figures cite a project cost of Rs 3,806 crore, investment potential of Rs 8,729 crore, and a target of 51,000 jobs.

What industries is Palakkad IMC being planned for?

Master plans point to pharmaceuticals, food and beverages, non-metallic mineral products, rubber and plastics, hi-tech/textiles, machinery and equipment, and medicinal chemicals and botanical products, with the sector mix varying by parcel.

What is the connectivity like?

The site sits on National Highway 544 (Salem–Kochi Road), near Palakkad Junction railway station, with access to Cochin and Coimbatore international airports and Cochin and Kozhikode ports.
