Air: Swami Vivekananda Airport

Status: operational. The nearest airport is Swami Vivekananda Airport, the only major airport of Chhattisgarh, and it lies within the city premises, in the western outskirts, about 10 km from the centre. It has a single runway measuring 3,250 m in length and 45 m in width, extended by 965 m and operationalised on 8 August 2024.

The airport recorded more than 27 lakh passengers during 2025-26, and airport officials describe it as one of central India's important aviation hubs, with sustained expansion since 2014. It currently operates with a modern integrated terminal building, a 3,250-metre runway, 13 aircraft parking bays, CAT-II Instrument Landing System (ILS) and advanced Air Traffic Control facilities.

Status: proposed, not yet operational (as of July 2026). Chhattisgarh's Chief Minister has said the Union Civil Aviation Minister agreed to examine a proposal for an international air cargo hub, and that the state will soon connect with Singapore and Dubai once international flights begin. As of November 2025, that proposal remained under consideration by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, with bidding processes expected to begin. A domestic air-cargo operation by Air India SATS has already begun as a step toward this. An Aerocity commercial/hospitality precinct near the airport, on land inside the Nava Raipur planning layer, was also announced but remains at an early development stage.

Expressways and National Highways

Operational. The Raipur–Naya Raipur Expressway, also known as Atal Path Expressway, is an access-controlled, six-lane, 12.7-kilometre expressway connecting Raipur to Naya Raipur. Work on the project started in April 2017 and is now fully complete. The road comprises four flyovers and one elevated corridor crossing over Great Eastern (GE) Road and NH-53 between the two ends of the stretch. The city itself is located between National Highway 53 and National Highway 30, about 17 km south-east of the capital city Raipur.

Under construction. The Durg–Raipur–Arang Expressway is an under-construction 92 km long, six-lane, access-controlled greenfield expressway that will pass from Durg through Anjora, Patora, Supkona, Abhanpur and Naya Raipur before terminating at Arang. Its total estimated cost is about Rs. 2,297 crore for the roughly 92 km route, and it forms part of the 1,854 km Mumbai–Kolkata Economic Corridor. Construction packages began in 2023–24; target completion dates cited by different sources range from 2025 to later, so treat any specific opening date as provisional until NHAI confirms it.

Under construction. The Raipur–Visakhapatnam Expressway (NH-130CD), part of the Raipur–Visakhapatnam Economic Corridor, is an under-construction, six-lane, 464 km greenfield expressway through Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, connecting Raipur (starting at Abhanpur) with Visakhapatnam Port via Dhamtari, Kanker, Kondagaon, Koraput and Sabbavaram. Due to delays, the expressway is now scheduled for completion in December 2026 (FY 2026-27). Total project cost is estimated at approximately INR 16,482 crore. It will start from Kurud, about 41 km south of Nava Raipur, and can be accessed from the city via NH-30.

Regional access. A 20-hour drive on either side of Atal Nagar via NH-53 reaches Kolkata and Mumbai respectively, while NH-30 and NH-16 connect it to Chennai and New Delhi. A proposed Raipur–Hyderabad Expressway (around 530 km) has also been reported passing through Durg, though it remains at a planning stage without confirmed construction dates.

Rail and freight

Operational (limited service). CBD Railway Station, also known as Nava Raipur-Atal Nagar Railway Station, is the main railway station serving Nava Raipur and one of the prominent stations on the Raipur–Abhanpur section of the Howrah–Nagpur–Mumbai line. The station was inaugurated on 25 August 2024, and the first railway service — the Raipur–Abhanpur–Raipur MEMU Passenger train — commenced on 30 March 2025. The associated 67-kilometre line project, estimated at ₹550 crore, was reported to be three years behind its original schedule.

Under construction / phased extension. Gauge-conversion work between Abhanpur and Dhamtari has been progressing, with officials targeting the start of train services to Dhamtari by around the end of the year and full service to Dhamtari expected in 2026. A related survey for a new line connecting Naya Raipur, Durg, Balodabazar and Kharsia was reported underway in late 2025.

Freight. A new Gati Shakti Rail Multi-Modal Cargo Terminal developed by Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) has been inaugurated in Naya Raipur to facilitate handling of petroleum wagons and boost rail freight for the Raipur Rail Division. No dedicated freight corridor (DFC) currently runs through Nava Raipur; freight movement relies on this SECR line and on road transport via the expressways above.

City road network (internal to the plan)

Operational and under construction. Nava Raipur has an entirely planned road network within the city premises, and has good connectivity with Raipur and the rest of the state via national and state highways. It has 75.26 km of 4/6-lane highways which are running, while a further 61 km of road network is under construction, according to NRDA-sourced figures. Nava Raipur is planned to have several four- and six-lane expressways spread across the city, spanning a total of around 140 km.

Airport access road. A four-lane VIP Road connects both Raipur and Nava Raipur to the Swami Vivekananda Airport. The airport is primarily accessed via National Highway 30 (NH-30), which provides a direct four-lane connection to the city centre, typically taking about 30 minutes by car.

Buses, BRTS and metro/light-rail proposals

Operational. Regular bus services are operated by NRDA, government and private operators from the Nava Raipur Bus Station, and the Raipur and Naya Raipur Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) also connects the city with Raipur, with 9 stops currently operating as part of the first phase of the smart-city project, to be expanded in future phases.

Proposed / early feasibility. A light rail, called Metrolite or Lite Metro in India, has been proposed by the Government of Chhattisgarh to run from Nava Raipur to Durg via Raipur and Bhilai. Separately, a Raipur–Durg metro rail corridor is at feasibility-study stage: the Chhattisgarh government has allocated INR 5 crore for a feasibility study of the Raipur-Durg metro rail project, aimed at modernising urban transport and reducing congestion between the two cities. No RRTS (Regional Rapid Transit System) project has been confirmed for Nava Raipur as of mid-2026; investors should treat both the Metrolite and metro proposals as pre-construction studies, not committed projects.

Ports

Nava Raipur is landlocked and has no port of its own. Its principal sea-link ambition is indirect: the Raipur–Visakhapatnam Expressway will connect Raipur, via Dhamtari, Kanker, Kondagaon, Koraput and Sabbavaram, before terminating at Visakhapatnam Port. Once complete, industries in Chhattisgarh and Odisha are expected to gain direct road access to Visakhapatnam Port and to the Chennai–Kolkata National Highway, strengthening export capacity. This corridor remains under construction and is not yet operational.
