Connectivity & Access
Zaheerabad Industrial Smart City (Zaheerabad IMC) — Connectivity
Zaheerabad Industrial Smart City sits on NH-65 about 80 km northwest of Hyderabad, with its main road, rail and air links still a mix of existing highway/rail access and long-pending regional projects rather than dedicated new infrastructure built for the node itself.

Road connectivity
The site is in close proximity to the 4-lane NH-65 (Pune to Machilipatnam) and is located at a distance of approximately 9 km North of Zaheerabad and about 80 km northwest of Hyderabad. Apart from NH-65, the multi-modal connectivity roads to the Zaheerabad Smart Industrial City include the 2-lane SH-14 (Zaheerabad - Bidar) which is about 2 km from the site and the 2-lane SH-16 (Nizampet - Bidar) that abuts the site.
The Industrial Smart City at Zaheerabad is also at a distance of approximately 65 km to the Hyderabad Outer Ring Road (ORR), approximately 48 km west of Proposed Regional Ring Road and approximately 10 km northwest of Bidar Town, Karnataka.
The Regional Ring Road (RRR), the closest planned expressway to the node, is being built in two halves and remains a work in progress. On the northern corridor — the half nearer Zaheerabad — the segment received environmental clearance on 18 March 2025, had tenders floated on 28 December 2024, and as of mid-2025 had approximately 48 percent of the required 1,785.5 acres acquired with compensation disbursed in Yadadri and Medak districts. Bitumen laying began on a 30 km Medak–Toopran–Bhongir stretch in June 2025. The Telangana CM declared March 2026 as the Phase 1 opening target. The southern corridor, which loops closer to Sangareddy near the Zaheerabad node, is further behind: Cabinet approved one of three proposed alignments on 23 June 2025, selecting the route with 99 percent agricultural land, while NHAI tenders floated in November 2024 have not yet been opened, with construction commencement expected FY 2026-27 at earliest, pending the Centre's clearance of a revised cost of ₹15,627 crore.
Separately, on the same day the industrial area's foundation stone was laid, the Centre also announced highway upgrades relevant to the wider region: the four-laning of National Highway-167 from Gudebellur to Mahabubnagar on the Hyderabad-Panaji Economic Corridor at a cost exceeding Rs 3,175 crore, expected to reduce travel time by nearly one hour and 30 minutes and improve connectivity between Telangana and Karnataka.
Rail connectivity
The Metalkunta Railway Station is at 12 km from the site and Zaheerabad Railway Station is about 19 km from the site. Both stations sit on the existing South Central Railway network running through the Sangareddy–Bidar belt; there is no separate rail spur built for the industrial node itself as of July 2026.
No dedicated freight corridor (DFC) has been announced through the Zaheerabad node. India's operating DFC network — the Eastern and Western corridors — runs through north and west India; as of March 2025, a total route length of 2,741 km (1,703 mi) was operational on those two lines, well outside Telangana. Freight movement to and from Zaheerabad therefore currently depends on the conventional broad-gauge SCR line and on road haulage via NH-65.
Air connectivity
The international airport at Shamshabad is about 125 km while the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) sea port near Mumbai is at a distance of 600 km and Krishnapatnam Port in Andhra Pradesh is at a distance of 620 km. Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), Shamshabad, is the nearest operational commercial and cargo airport; no dedicated or greenfield airport project has been announced for Zaheerabad itself. The 10 km proximity to Bidar, Karnataka, means the town could theoretically draw on any future civil-aviation development there, but no such project surfaced in current research.
Ports and freight corridors
Zaheerabad is landlocked and far from India's major ports. The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) sea port near Mumbai is at a distance of 600 km and Krishnapatnam Port in Andhra Pradesh is at a distance of 620 km — both cited by NICDC only as reference distances, not as routes served by any dedicated freight link. Cargo movement to either port currently relies on the general road/rail network rather than a purpose-built corridor.
Metro and RRTS proposals
No metro or Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) line has been proposed to serve the Zaheerabad node as of July 2026. The nearest urban rail system, the Hyderabad Metro, is itself roughly 80 km away and is still expanding within the city: Phase I of the metro, spanning 69.2 km across three corridors, was launched in 2012 and became operational in 2017, connecting Miyapur to LB Nagar, Jubilee Bus Station to Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station, and Nagole to Raidurg. A Phase 2 expansion, including an airport-linked corridor, remains at the planning stage: the proposed Phase II seeks to address network gaps through an additional 162.5 km of metro lines, split into Phase II-A and Phase II-B. None of these proposed lines extend toward Sangareddy district or Zaheerabad.
Internal roads and site infrastructure
Internal road, utility and plug-and-play infrastructure for the industrial area is being organised through the project's special purpose vehicle rather than announced as a public road scheme. NICDIT Zaheerabad Industrial Smart City Ltd., a Special Purpose Vehicle, has been incorporated with equity contribution from National Industrial Corridor Development and Implementation Trust (NICDIT) and Telangana Industrial Infrastructure Corporation Limited (TGIIC) for development of Zaheerabad Industrial Area in Telangana. The SPV has invited bids for a Programme Manager for New Cities, whose role covers coordination with the EPC contractor already appointed for trunk works. At the 10 May 2026 foundation-laying event, the Prime Minister's Office described the node's intended access as follows: developed at a cost of over Rs 2,350 crore across 3,245 acres, the industrial area is strategically located along NH-65 and will offer multimodal connectivity to major cities, ports, rail networks and airports. Detailed internal road layouts, widths and phasing had not been published in any source found as of this research date.

Frequently asked questions
Is Zaheerabad Industrial Smart City directly connected to Hyderabad by expressway?
Not yet by a dedicated expressway. It sits on NH-65, about 80 km from Hyderabad, and is roughly 65 km from the existing Outer Ring Road and about 48 km from the proposed Regional Ring Road, which is still under construction on its northern side and only at land-acquisition/tendering stage on its southern side as of mid-2025–2026.
What is the nearest airport to the Zaheerabad site?
Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Shamshabad, roughly 125 km away. No dedicated or new airport has been announced for the Zaheerabad node itself.
Does a dedicated freight corridor (DFC) pass through Zaheerabad?
No. India's operational Eastern and Western Dedicated Freight Corridors run through north and west India and do not touch Telangana. Zaheerabad's rail freight access is via the existing South Central Railway network.
Which railway stations serve the site?
Metalkunta station is about 12 km away and Zaheerabad station about 19 km away, both on the existing South Central Railway line.
Is a metro or RRTS line planned to reach Zaheerabad?
No metro or RRTS proposal currently extends to Zaheerabad. The nearest network, Hyderabad Metro, is about 80 km away and its own Phase 2 expansion (including an airport-linked line) is still at the planning/approval stage.
When was the industrial area's foundation stone laid?
Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the Zaheerabad Integrated Industrial Smart City on 10 May 2026, alongside other Telangana infrastructure projects.
How far is Zaheerabad from major seaports?
It is landlocked and distant from ports — about 600 km from JNPT near Mumbai and about 620 km from Krishnapatnam Port in Andhra Pradesh — with no dedicated freight link to either as of current information.
