What Vikram Udyogpuri Is
The site for the proposed project “Vikram Udyogpuri” is located at village Narwar about 8 km far from Ujjain and 12 km far from Dewas and has a total area of 442.3 Ha (1096acres). Integrated Industrial Township Vikram Udyogpuri (IIT-VUL), developed over 1,100 acres in Ujjain, is a key DMIC project driving the Pithampur-Dhar-Mhow Investment Region, strategically located near SH-18 and the Ujjain-Dewas railway line. It is one of the industrial townships built under the central government's Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor programme, alongside similar projects such as Dholera (Gujarat), Shendra-Bidkin (Maharashtra) and Greater Noida (Uttar Pradesh).
It is intended that the project Vikram Udyogpuri will have a sustainable economic base primarily driven by a manufacturing product mix, along with institutional (public and semi-public) land use, supported by residential and commercial activities. AMUL is the anchor investor, with 12 operational units and 16+ under construction; key sectors include pharma, plastics, and food.
Who Is Building It
A Special Purpose Vehicle (DMICVUL) namely the Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor Vikram Udyogpuri Limited has been incorporated for achieving the goals of enhancing employment, industrial output and exports from the region, with sectoral objectives of providing quality industrial investments and world-class infrastructure facilities. Dmic Vikram Udyogpuri Limited, a state government company, was established on 18 March 2010 in Madhya Pradesh, formerly known as Madhya Pradesh Vikramaditya Knowledge City (Ujjain) Limited. On the ground, the Madhya Pradesh Industrial Development Corporation (MPIDC) manages day-to-day expansion and allotment, working with the National Industrial Corridor Development Corporation (NICDC), the central agency overseeing DMIC-programme projects nationally.
Official Notified Area, Villages and District
Located in Narwar village, 8 km from Ujjain and 12 km from Dewas, the project spans 442.3 hectares (1,096 acres) and features trunk infrastructure and supporting social and physical amenities, strategically positioned along State Highway 18 (SH-18) within the DMIC region. The township therefore sits administratively in Ujjain district, Madhya Pradesh, right on the boundary corridor between Ujjain and Dewas cities. As the original notified area filled up, the Madhya Pradesh Industrial Development Corporation (MPIDC) acquired over 400 hectares of private land to develop Phase 2, with the existing industrial area spanning 458 hectares and nearing full capacity.
Why It Exists
The Government of India is developing the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) as a global manufacturing and investment destination, and Vikram Udyogpuri is Madhya Pradesh's node in that network. Integrated plotting for industrial, commercial, public/semi-public (PSP), residential, logistic and recreation uses is planned, with expected employment generation of 78,000 jobs and expected attractive investment of about INR 11,000 to 13,000 crore. The intent is to convert a stretch of farmland between two mid-sized Malwa-region cities into a plug-and-play manufacturing base, riding on Ujjain and Dewas's existing highway and rail links rather than starting from a blank slate.
Current Status (as of early-mid 2025-26)
The original Phase-1 land parcel is effectively full. So far, 58 industries have secured land in the existing industrial area, with over 15 already in trial or production stages, representing proposed investments exceeding Rs 50 billion (approx. $600 million). Notable companies that have secured space include PepsiCo India, Amul, Ashirvad Pipes, Symbiotic Life, Karnataka Antibiotics, Yashoda Linen, and Srinivas Pharma. NICDC's own project page confirms AMUL is the anchor investor, with 12 operational units and 16+ under construction.
Demand has outstripped the original allotment: MPIDC has received nearly 200 investment proposals from industries looking to acquire approximately 121 hectares of land in the area. To handle this, MPIDC has acquired over 400 hectares of private land to launch the second phase, and a detailed project report will be prepared. On environmental infrastructure, a 5.2 MLD common effluent treatment plant (CEPT) was set up at a cost of over INR 24 crore, designed to handle effluents generated by industries in the zone, with an estimated effluent generation of 3-4 MLD.
At the national policy level, Vikram Udyogpuri is officially listed by NICDC among its 4 Projects Developed, alongside Dholera Special Investment Region, Gujarat; Shendra-Bidkin Industrial Area, Maharashtra; and Integrated Industrial Township, Greater Noida — placing it in the more mature tier of DMIC projects rather than the newer 12 industrial cities approved by the Union Cabinet in August 2024.
Headline Connectivity
Road: the project is strategically positioned along State Highway 18 (SH-18) between Ujjain and Dewas, within the DMIC region. Rail: it sits next to the Ujjain-Dewas railway line, with Ujjain Junction — an 8-platform broad-gauge station on Western Railway — roughly 15 km away via the nearby Vikram Nagar and Chintaman Ganesh halts. Air: Ujjain is situated at 57 KMs from Indore International Airport, which is well connected to all parts of the globe; other distance sources put the airport-to-Ujjain distance at approximately 50-56 km, and a separate, smaller Ujjain airport project has been discussed locally but is not yet operational. Utilities: the site has an uninterrupted 11 MLD Narmada-based water supply through an in-house water treatment plant, and uninterrupted power supply through a 132 kV substation near the industrial area plus three 33/11 kV substations across its three zones.
What Happens Next
The near-term story is Phase 2. MPIDC Ujjain executive director Rajesh Rathod said the corporation is moving ahead with Phase 2 due to high demand for industrial space, as the existing area is nearly fully occupied and there has been a surge in investment proposals. A detailed project report is being prepared, and this project was highlighted at the Investors' Summit 2025 in Bhopal as Madhya Pradesh sought to convert investor interest into fresh allotments on the newly acquired 400+ hectare parcel. Once the DPR is finalised and trunk infrastructure (roads, water, power, effluent treatment) is extended to the new parcel, Phase 2 plots are expected to go the same allotment route as Phase 1 — through MPIDC/DMICVUL — to the roughly 200 industries currently on the waiting list for the ~121 hectares of demand already recorded.
