Him Panchkula Connectivity: Airports, Highways, Rail and Road Access

Project status: what "Him Panchkula" actually is right now

Him Panchkula has not progressed beyond the naming/concept stage. The Himachal Pradesh government is planning a series of urban development projects, including Him Chandigarh, Him Panchkula and Kangra Valley Aero City, as part of efforts to promote planned urbanisation and create new revenue sources for the state. The initiatives were discussed during a review meeting of the Himachal Pradesh Housing and Urban Development Authority (HIMUDA) chaired by Town and Country Planning Minister Rajesh Dharmani.

Unlike the sister project Him Chandigarh — where land for the project was being acquired through mutual agreement and land pooling and a location in the Shitalpur-Baddi belt of Solan district has been named — no equivalent site, land-pooling process or master plan has been publicly identified for Him Panchkula as of this review meeting (May 2026). No RERA registration, notified boundary, village list or land-use plan for Him Panchkula has been found in current public records, so none is stated here.

Because no confirmed site exists, this page cannot state Him Panchkula-specific airport, highway or rail distances. Instead, it documents the confirmed regional transport infrastructure of the Sirmaur/Panchkula–Kalka corridor — the general area the project is associated with by name — which would be relevant background for anyone tracking the project once a site is notified.

Airports

There is no airport, airstrip or heliport announced for Him Panchkula itself. The nearest operational commercial airport to the Panchkula–Kalka belt is Chandigarh International Airport. Local government tourism data for the Kalka area records Chandigarh International Airport and distance from Airport to Kali Mata Mandir is 42 KM by road, giving a general sense of scale for this part of the tri-city fringe. This airport is operational today (2026) and serves Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula, along with the Himachal border towns of Kalka and Parwanoo.

Separately, the Himachal Pradesh government has floated a "Kangra Valley Aero City" concept alongside Him Panchkula and Him Chandigarh, but that is a distinct project tied to Kangra/Gaggal, not to the Panchkula-facing Sirmaur belt, and is likewise at an early planning stage.

Expressways and national highways

No highway has been built, widened or realigned specifically for Him Panchkula. The following are the confirmed, dated highway projects in the wider Sirmaur/Kalka–Panchkula corridor that any future township here would depend on:

• Himalayan Expressway / Chandigarh–Shimla corridor (NH-5): a 27.5 km stretch of highway that runs through the Shivaliks at the trijunction of Haryana, Punjab, and Himachal Pradesh, forming part of the Chandigarh–Shimla Expressway which connects Zirakpur in Punjab to Parwanoo in Himachal Pradesh. It is operational but was damaged by landslides and floods during the 2023 North India floods, which geologists linked to slope destabilisation from the highway cutting, and has needed repair work since.
• NH-07 (Kala Amb–Paonta Sahib), Sirmaur's first four-lane highway: a 51-km highway that will span from Kala Amb, an industrial hub near the state's border, to Bata Bridge near Paonta Sahib, approved by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways for the 2024-25 annual working plan. As of 2024 reporting, a 7-km four-lane stretch from the Yamuna bridge in Paonta Sahib to Surajpur had already been constructed, with the remaining 50 km from Kala Amb to Surajpur set to be built next, so this remains under construction.
• NH-707 "green corridor" (Paonta Sahib–Shillai–Gumma/Fedizpul): construction of the state's first green corridor, the Paonta-Shillai-Gumma NH-707, is underway, and by 2026 reporting the Paonta Sahib-Shillai-Fedizpul Green Corridor National Highway project, being developed at a cost of Rs 1,426 crore, was nearing completion.
• NH-907A and NH-907: Sirmaur is also served by the 78-km Nahan-Kumarhatti NH-907A and the 7-km Laldhang-Batta Chowk NH-907, both operational as existing routes.
• Kalka–Shimla four-lane highway (NH-5/old NH-22): as of a 2026 update, work on the Kalka-Shimla four-lane highway was progressing rapidly — this is under construction, not complete.
• District-wide highway total: the district currently has four national highways spanning 262 km (2024 figure).

A recent bridge milestone on NH-07: the 180-metre-long bowstring bridge over the Markanda river at Khajurna was opened to traffic in 2026, expected to significantly improve transportation for local residents, tourists and commuters travelling between Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, and it is expected to support future four-laning plans on NH-07.

Rail and dedicated freight corridors

No rail line or freight corridor has been proposed for Him Panchkula specifically. The relevant operating rail asset in the region is the historic Kalka railway station, which is the northern terminal of the Delhi-Kalka line of Northern Railway, serving as terminal station for the broad gauge line towards Chandigarh and the narrow gauge line towards Shimla. Direct broad-gauge trains connect Kalka to Delhi, Howrah and other cities, and trains have also been started from Kalka to Shirdi and to Katra on specific days of the week.

The narrow-gauge Kalka–Shimla Railway is a UNESCO World Heritage line: it features on UNESCO's World Heritage Sites list, with work on the line starting in 1898 and opening for traffic in 1903. It remains operational as a heritage/tourist and local passenger line, not a freight corridor.

No Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) alignment has been reported passing through the Sirmaur/Panchkula belt in current search results; none is claimed here.

Metro, RRTS and mass transit proposals

No metro rail, light rail or Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) line has been announced for Him Panchkula or for the Sirmaur district portion of the Panchkula–Kalka belt. Chandigarh's own metro proposals (periodically discussed for the wider tri-city area of Chandigarh–Mohali–Panchkula) are a separate, Haryana/Punjab/Chandigarh-side planning matter and are not confirmed as extending into Himachal Pradesh's Sirmaur territory. No claim is made here about any such extension.

Ports

Him Panchkula's location in the landlocked Shivalik hill belt of Himachal Pradesh means sea ports are not relevant to this project. There is no dry port, inland container depot or river port announced for the site. This section is included only to confirm that ports are not a relevant connectivity mode here.

Internal road network of the plan

Because Him Panchkula has no notified boundary, layout or master plan as of mid-2026, there is no internal road network, sector-road grid, or arterial-road specification to report. Once HIMUDA notifies a site and layout — as it has begun to do for the comparable Him Chandigarh project — this page will be updated with sector-road widths, arterial spacing and phasing, sourced to the official notification.

For context, the Him Chandigarh project (announced earlier and further along) is intended to enable the development of a modern urban center and also help connect the Baddi-Nalagarh industrial corridor and the Tricity; Him Panchkula, going by its name and its grouping with Him Chandigarh in state announcements, appears intended to serve a similar Tricity-linking role for the Sirmaur/Panchkula side, but this has not been confirmed in an official document.
