What Happened
Industries and Commerce Minister T G Bharath met Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in New Delhi and submitted a detailed memorandum seeking early approval for railway projects linked to industrial nodes being developed under the National Industrial Corridor Development Corporation (NICDC). The meeting focused on accelerating rail infrastructure critical to two industrial development zones.
Bharath sought priority for improving rail connectivity to the Orvakal Industrial Node under the Hyderabad-Bengaluru Industrial Corridor and the Krishnapatnam Industrial Node under the Chennai-Bengaluru Industrial Corridor.
The Railway Proposals
The minister requested a new railway chord line from Dupadu railway station to Bethamcherla via Orvakal, along with a 53-km railway siding connecting the Orvakal Industrial Node. The project aims to eliminate the need to pass through Dhone railway station when travelling from Kurnool to Nandyal, and avoid delays associated with the changing of locomotives at Dhone station.
Bharath also sought a 12-km railway siding linking the Krishnapatnam Industrial Node with the Obulavaripalle-Krishnapatnam railway line.
Why It Matters—Urgency Factor
Several industries at Orvakal are expected to begin commercial production within the next two months, making rail connectivity an urgent requirement. Early approval of the proposed railway projects would reduce logistics costs, improve industrial competitiveness and accelerate the State's economic growth.
The projects would improve cargo movement, strengthen port connectivity and support the development of integrated multi-modal logistics parks, creating more than four lakh direct and indirect jobs.
Government Response
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw responded positively and assured that the proposals would be examined for early approval. No formal timeline or approval conditions were announced.
About the Orvakal Industrial Node
The Orvakal node in Kurnool District, spanning 2,621 acres, is being developed under the Hyderabad-Bengaluru Industrial Corridor. The Andhra Pradesh Industrial Corridor Authority approved the final master plan for the land use pattern, comprising 52 per cent of the land being utilised for industrial purposes.
The site is strategically located with access to NH40, NH44, Kurnool Bypass, ensuring robust road connectivity. The Orvakal and Kopparthy nodes have already received Central approval under their respective industrial corridors.
Broader Context
Andhra Pradesh is developing three industrial nodes under the NICDC with Central support. Infrastructure work is progressing at the Krishnapatnam Node, while the Orvakal and Kopparthy nodes have already received Central approval.
Minister Bharath also raised regional rail demands, urging the Centre to introduce a daily passenger train between Kurnool and Vijayawada and a weekly or bi-weekly train between Kurnool and Mumbai.
What Comes Next
The railway proposals are now under examination by the Union Ministry of Railways. No formal approval timeline has been announced. The requests will likely be evaluated against national railway capacity, budget allocations, and project engineering feasibility studies. Implementation would depend on Cabinet approval and budget allocation in subsequent financial years.
