Finance Minister Sitharaman Reviews Industrial Corridor Programme; Directs Focus on Tumakuru and 19 Other Projects

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stressed on August 17, 2026, that India's industrial corridor focus must move beyond project approvals towards timely completion of infrastructure, investment and production, chairing the 3rd Meeting of the Apex Monitoring Authority of the National Industrial Corridor Development and Implementation Trust (NICDIT). The Tumakuru node of the Bengaluru–Chennai Industrial Corridor was among the projects reviewed, with 30 per cent physical progress and 20 per cent financial progress reported as of August 2026.

Apex Authority Directs Faster Execution Across 20 Industrial Corridor Projects

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman chaired the 3rd Meeting of the Apex Monitoring Authority of the National Industrial Corridor Development and Implementation Trust (NICDIT) in New Delhi on August 17, 2026. Sitharaman stressed that the focus must move beyond project approvals towards timely completion of infrastructure, investment and commencement of production.

The meeting was attended by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, and NITI Aayog Vice-Chairman Ashok Kumar Lahiri. The meeting reviewed progress of projects under the National Industrial Corridor Development Programme (NICDP) and deliberated on priorities for the next phase of industrial corridor development.

FM Sitharaman called for focus to move to timely completion of infrastructure, land allotment, investment and production, and urged states to address bottlenecks related to land, connectivity, utilities, statutory clearances and project SPV powers.

Tumakuru Node Reports 30% Physical Progress; Sector Focus Announced

The Tumakuru Node of the Bengaluru–Chennai Industrial Corridor has achieved 30 per cent physical progress and 20 per cent financial progress as of August 2026. Karnataka's Large and Medium Industries Minister M B Patil reported that 1,736 acres have been earmarked for Tumakuru's development as major industrial manufacturing hub.

Of the land earmarked, 300 acres have been allotted for a Japan Industrial Township and 200 acres for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Jindal Aluminium is the anchor investor in the node and has been allotted 151 acres.

The node will prioritise sectors such as food and beverages, textiles and apparel, electronics, chemicals, general engineering and logistics. Land acquisition is progressing smoothly, and the project is scheduled for completion in 2027.

National Programme Attracts 469 Allotted Plots; BHAVYA Initiative Launched

The National Industrial Corridor Development Programme now spans 20 projects across 13 States, with total project cost of Rs 50,759 crore having potential to attract Rs 5.35 lakh crore in investments and generate 14 lakh jobs.

To date, 469 plots covering around 5,348 acres have been allotted, carrying investment potential of roughly Rs 2.21 lakh crore and expected to create employment for around 1.29 lakh people. Of allotted units, 134 are already in production while another 95 are under construction.

Under the new BHAVYA initiative announced by Sitharaman, 100 industrial parks will be established nationally over 2026-27 to 2031-32 with Rs 33,660 crore investment. In the first phase, up to 50 industrial parks will be selected through challenge-based competitive process; 87 state applications were received for first round.

Infrastructure Completion and Worker Housing Prioritised Going Forward

FM Sitharaman emphasised integrated planning through PM GatiShakti and investor-friendly land allotment mechanisms, noting that worker housing, healthcare, skilling, public transport and other social amenities should be integral components of industrial development.

Sitharaman highlighted Government support for infrastructure and manufacturing through enhanced public capital expenditure, support to States under SASCI, improved credit support for manufacturing MSMEs, and tax and customs measures aimed at strengthening domestic manufacturing and supply chains.

She stressed preparing industrial land and infrastructure pipelines ahead of demand and emphasised the convergence of freight, industrial development, railways, and expressways, known as FIRE Corridors, for programme success.
