NICDC Confirms All 20 Greenfield Industrial Smart Cities Granted Environmental Clearance, Including Tumakuru

The Portfolio Breakdown

The 20 cities comprise 4 developed greenfield industrial smart cities (Dholera Special Investment Region in Gujarat, Shendra Bidkin Industrial Area in Maharashtra, Integrated Industrial Township Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh, and Integrated Industrial Township Vikram Udyogpuri in Madhya Pradesh), 4 projects nearing completion (Tumakuru Industrial Area in Karnataka, Krishnapatnam Industrial Area in Andhra Pradesh, Integrated Multi Modal Logistics Hub at Nangal Chaudhary in Haryana, and Multi Modal Logistics & Transport Hub at Dadri in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh), and 12 recently approved and upcoming projects.

Tumakuru Industrial Area Status

Tumakuru Industrial Township, part of the Chennai-Bengaluru Industrial Corridor, spans 8,484 acres and is being developed in three phases, with Phase-A covering 1,722 acres. Located 120 km north of Bengaluru and 20 km from Tumakuru city, the site offers excellent connectivity via NH-48, nearby railway stations, and Bengaluru International Airport.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of Tumakuru Industrial Township on 6th February 2023. The Tumakuru node is under construction and is expected to deliver plug-and-play infrastructure by late 2026.

Broader Program Context

In August 2024, the Government of India approved 12 new industrial projects as part of NICDC's greenfield smart cities acceleration, spanning approximately 10,512 hectares across six major industrial corridors.

Under Phase 1, four operational cities covering 3,124 hectares have already attracted over USD 20.6 billion in investments, generating employment for more than 100,000 people, with key projects including Dholera, AURIC, Greater Noida, and Vikram Udyogpuri.

What Comes Next for Tumakuru

An EPC contractor was appointed in February 2023 and has started construction of roads, minor bridges, stormwater drains, utility ducts, and water treatment plants. The project now advances without environmental regulatory obstacles, allowing trunk infrastructure work to accelerate toward the targeted completion window.

With environmental clearance in place, the next phases involve completing Phase-A utilities and mobilizing land allotments to anchor investors and industrial tenants seeking plug-and-play facilities in the Chennai-Bengaluru corridor.
