New Shillong Township: Connectivity — Airports, Highways, Rail and Internal Roads

Airports

New Shillong has no airport of its own. The nearest is Shillong Airport at Umroi, roughly 30-35 km from the city, which handled 119,982 passengers in FY2024-25, a year-on-year rise, but still has a thin flight schedule. Shillong Airport (Umroi) is 35km from the city center but has limited flights.

As of November 2025, the state government reported that expansion work at Umroi was progressing, with officials saying the expansion work at Umroi Airport is progressing well and is expected to be completed within the next 18 months, after which the upgraded airport will be able to handle larger aircraft and increased passenger movement — putting a realistic completion window around mid-2027, subject to further slippage.

For most visitors and businesses, the effective gateway remains Assam. Meghalaya lacks robust air and no rail connectivity, forcing most visitors to enter via Assam... Guwahati is Meghalaya's gateway. Tourists typically fly into Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi Airport or arrive at Guwahati Junction, then continue by road into the hills. There is no confirmed timeline, as of July 2026, for a dedicated air link serving New Shillong Township specifically.

Rail and Freight Corridors

There is currently no railway service to Shillong or New Shillong. There is no railway line to Shillong; the nearest major railhead and the nearest international airport are in Guwahati. There are no rail lines in Meghalaya. The nearest railway station is Guwahati. It is 104 km from Shillong and very well connected with all major cities of India.

A long-pending Byrnihat–Shillong railway line has been proposed for over a decade. Under one alignment studied by Northeast Frontier Railway, the proposed Byrnihat-Shillong railway line will have a total of 100 bridges on the route... There will be 10 stations on the proposed route — Byrnihat, Sohkhwai, Lailad, Umsong, Umar, Nongsder, Kyrdemkulai, Umroi, Umpling and New Shillong. This means a station literally named "New Shillong" exists in railway planning records, but no construction has begun on this stretch and it remains a proposal only.

The project has been stalled for years over community opposition. Uncertainty continues over Tetelia-Byrnihat and Byrnihat-New Shillong projects... The Northeast Frontier Railway authorities are still optimistic that the two projects will take off once all obstacles are cleared. As of late 2025, the state government was actively engaging with stakeholders to explore the long-pending proposal for railway connectivity in the Khasi-Jaintia Hills, but no consensus had been reached.

The feeder line in Assam has seen partial progress: Teteliya-Kamalajari (10.15 km) operation in May 2025 but Kamalajari-Byrnihat (11.35 km) completion deadline officially not yet set as of May 2025 as work was stopped by Khasi Student Union in 2017. Meghalaya's only operational rail link remains the unrelated Mendipathar–Guwahati line, total 131 km long with 20 km in Meghalaya... operational since 2014, which serves Garo Hills, not Shillong. No dedicated freight corridor serves the state; goods movement is entirely road-based.

Highways and the Shillong–Silchar Expressway

The township sits near National Highway 40, the existing all-weather road linking Guwahati and Shillong. National Highway 40 connects Guwahati to Shillong. Several internal approach roads are being built to link New Shillong to the Shillong Bypass and the Shillong–Jowai road rather than routing traffic through the congested old city. The state government is looking to construct several approach roads from the NST to the Shillong Bypass, Shillong-Jowai road, etc.

The biggest regional highway project affecting the area is the Shillong–Silchar Expressway, approved by the Union Cabinet in April 2025. Shillong to Silchar 4 lane Expressway has been approved under PM Gati Shakti, government led ₹22,864 crore for 166.80 km Shillong-Silchar Expressway. It is designed as an access-controlled greenfield highway: the project will be a four-lane, access-controlled greenfield highway aimed at high-speed travel. The alignment ties into existing highways — the project alignment integrates with major transport corridors, including NH-27, NH-106, NH-206 and NH-37 providing seamless connectivity to Guwahati, Shillong, Silchar, Diengpasoh, Ummulong, Phramer, Khlieriat, Ratachera, Umkiang, Kalain — and is expected to significantly reduce travel time between the two towns to just four hours. As of the approval date, this is a sanctioned/approved project; construction start dates for specific packages had not been separately confirmed at the time of research.

Metro, RRTS and Mass Transit

No metro rail or Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) has been proposed for Shillong or New Shillong Township as of July 2026. The only transit-related planning identified is a road-based mobility framework: a Comprehensive Mobility Plan covering New Shillong. A Comprehensive Mobility Plan has laid out a 30-year transport roadmap for New Shillong, including a structured road grid and improved regional connectivity. This is a planning document for road hierarchy and future transit corridors, not a confirmed metro or RRTS scheme.

Ports

Meghalaya is landlocked and East Khasi Hills district has no navigable waterway or port relevant to New Shillong Township. No port or inland waterway terminal proposal tied to the township was found in current records; this connectivity mode does not apply to the region.

Internal Road Network of New Shillong Township

Road-building inside the township itself is the most advanced connectivity work underway. A foundation for a package of internal roads was laid in March 2024: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma laid the foundation for construction of internal roads within the Township... built at an estimated cost of Rs 343 crores. The package covers specific links: roads from Ummir to Mawkhanu and Kynoton to Lyngkien, Bellefonte to New Township, Diengpasoh road to Shillong Bypass, and Bribah Mawpat to New Township... being built at a total cost of Rs 343 crore.

A second phase has been proposed on top of this: in phase 2, roads measuring 16.6 km with 15m width, and 3.2 km of 2-lane roads with 7.5m width have been proposed at a total cost of Rs 185 crore. Separately, central funding under PM-DevINE has been allocated for upgrading a key stretch: the Central government has allocated Rs 146.79 crore for construction of a new four-lane road and the conversion of an existing two-lane road into a four-lane avenue in New Shillong Township. This includes the integration of cycling tracks, utility ducts, footpaths, and other essential features... allocated from the Prime Minister's Development Initiative for North East Region (PM-DevINE).

By May 2025, this four-laning was visibly under construction and inspected by the Chief Minister: a major highlight was the review of the ongoing expansion of a two-lane road into a four-lane highway. The upgraded route will include a dedicated cycling lane and integrated utility corridors to enhance internal connectivity. Officials stated that the project is expected to ease traffic congestion and facilitate long-term urban growth.

One key link, the Ummir–Mawkhanu Road, was reported complete by mid-2025: Sangma also inspected... the newly completed Ummir to Mawkhanu Road, which connects to the Administrative and Knowledge City. Avenue plantation along this stretch was planned for later in 2025. The 8-10 km stretch of Ummir to Mawkhanu Road will soon be adorned with avenue plantations. The government will plant cherry blossom trees and indigenous species in a carefully planned layout.

Most recently, in November 2025 the state Cabinet approved land for a corridor to physically link the two halves of the township: in November 2025, the Meghalaya Cabinet approved acquisition of an additional 35 acres of land at Tynring in New Shillong Township to develop a corridor linking the Administrative City and the Knowledge City.
